Our Sustainability Journey
Progress in our sustainability efforts comes in all shapes and sizes, from Great Dane-sized projects to tiny kitten initiatives. Regardless of the challenges, we can assure you that we’re motivated and passionate about doing better and being better.
Our Commitment to Sustainability
Petcurean is committed to being a leader in sustainability in protecting pets, people and our planet, and we have been passionate about making a difference in the world since day one. Our commitments keep challenging the status quo and because we insist on being open and transparent, we strive for continuous improvement in both our performance and our reporting. We have a dedicated Sustainability Manager leading our efforts and a Sustainability Committee helping to propel us forward.
A Sustainability Plan with a Purpose
Our sustainability plan guides our purposeful steps towards creating positive impacts for pets, planet and the communities we live and work in. We do this through four key Impact Areas.
- Protecting Our PlanetOptimizing our business practices to reduce our environmental footprint, protect the health of the world around us, and contribute to a more sustainable future
- Empowering Our TeamSupporting our team members’ physical, social, professional and financial well-being
- Uplifting Our CommunityGratefully giving back to the communities we serve through year-round support
- Commitment to GovernanceBecoming ever more accountable, transparent and ethical in the way we work
Petcurean's Four Key Impact Areas for Sustainability
Our Second Annual
Sustainability Impact Report
After establishing the foundation for our four year sustainability plan in the 2021 fiscal year, our team kicked things up a notch (or two!) in fiscal year 2022 to gain traction and push our work in sustainability even further. Read all about it in our latest Sustainability Impact Report.
Proud Member of the Pet Sustainability Coalition
Petcurean is honoured to be Guardian Member of the Pet Sustainability Coalition (PSC). We’ve been members since 2017 and have been a Pet Sustainability Accredited Company every year since 2018. This Accreditation certifies that we’ve completed an assessment of our business operations in alignment with the United Nations’ SDGs. Our sustainability performance has been audited by a third party, and shown progress annually.
Supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
Our sustainability plan indicates how we’ll progress towards the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030. While we plan to support all 17 SDGs, we’re particularly focused on SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, and SDG 13: Climate Action.
Here are just some of the ways we’re supporting our primary UN SDGs:
We embraced a distributed team approach (i.e. decentralized) for the health, safety, and happiness of our people
We’ve signed the PSC Packaging Pledge and will make the majority of our packaging recyclable by 2025
We're carbon neutral
Our Tier 1 suppliers have signed our Supplier Code of Conduct
We create and produce our pet foods in the most responsible and sustainable manner possible
We’ve donated over 5 million meals for pets in need so far
Petcurean’s Heart in Action
We put pets first here at Petcurean, in everything we do. Our hearts especially go out to pets in need, and we support them in our communities to ensure a brighter future for all. Through external outreach and internal initiatives, we donate our time and resources to support the following:
When the amount of carbon dioxide a company emits into the atmosphere is equal to the amount they then remove from the atmosphere.
The Pet Sustainability Coalition (“PSC”) is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating a more sustainable pet industry. Petcurean is proud to be a Guardian member (the second highest membership level), and has been a PSC member since 2017. Learn more about PSC here: PSC – Implementing Sustainability in the Pet Industry (petsustainability.org)
PSC Accreditation means that Petcurean has completed a sustainability assessment of our business operations, to measure our progress towards meeting the United Nations’ SDGs. Our sustainability performance is audited by a third party and we are required to show progress each year. Petcurean has been an Accredited Company every year since 2018. We are the only pet food company in Canada to achieve PSC Accredited Company status.
Petcurean is proud to be part of the inaugural group of signatories of this landmark Pledge for the pet industry. By signing it, we are committing to move to 100% recyclable, reusable, or compostable packaging by 2025. Learn more about the Pledge here: PSC Packaging Pledge – PSC (petsustainability.org)
Petcurean’s Supplier Code of Conduct is a policy that holds our major suppliers accountable for specific social and environmental objectives. It covers seven key areas: business integrity; human rights; fair and equal treatment; benefits, compensation, and hours; health and safety; environmental management; and communication and reporting. Our Tier 1 suppliers that have signed our Code of Conduct include Elmira Pet Products, WJ Packaging Solutions, Peel Plastic Products, and Hensall Global Logistics. Contact us if you’d like to see our Supplier Code of Conduct.
In 2016, the United Nations created 17 objectives to tackle the world’s biggest problems. The SDGs emphasize the interconnectedness between the environment, society and economy. These objectives are set to be achieved by 2030 but in order to reach this target, the entire world will need to cooperate. We’ve committed to support the United Nations work to achieve these goals.
